I remember the life long friends that I made from ASU. I have a couple of year books to boot. My walk down memory lane began with me walking on the ASU Women’s Track Team arriving from Orange Coast College Women’s Track Team. Coach Williams, my fellow Sorority sister, accepted me with open arms. We had to have our bodies and our hair flawless for track meets. Triple T, I remember us. SQDP, stood for Student Quality Development Program, A group of us met and provided tool to other students of how to capture and learn study materials. Ken Darrington, I appreciated the work study. Dr. Crawford, my fellow Sorority sister, was tough, but she gets much love for her knowledge. There were so many people who were great leaders that contributed to my great learning for this HBCU. Mrs. Turner, Dr. Wathall (after marriage), Coach Krump, Mr. Whitfield, Dean Vaughn was a stickler for “No hats in the BA”, Dr. Self, Coach Buffy, also a Sorority sister- great. This walk could go on forever. Pledging, “Oops”. Still active, volunteering, doing charity, working with relief, providing bereavement, etc. Thanks for the walk. |

| About ASU: |
I value the experience and education that I received at ASU. Not only did I receive the necessary skill sets for my major (Accounting), but I developed an overall understanding of Business as a whole and have used that experience to effectively manage other functional areas of my business (Marketing, IS, Finance, Economics, etc). I have excelled in Leadership positions from my experiences in the College of Business. The case studies, the presentations, the public speaking and the professional organizations (Alpha Kappa Psi) all prepared me for my past and current roles. I have competed with my peers who received degrees from other institutions (Notre Dame, University of Michigan, University of Texas, Berkley, Duke, Boston College, University of Colorado, etc.) and I consistently outperform those peers. I have come to realize that quality of education I received from ASU, no matter how it is perceived, was far superior to the education received by my peers. The accomplishments of COBA should be commended and ranked appropriately with other schools in the nation. Now as an executive in my company, I am excited about recruiting more talent from COBA.

My journey was a long, hard, and rocky road. However, a wise man once said, "Without struggle, there can be no progress." I'm sure you know whose quote it is. I still remember the good times of being in the Dramatic Guild as stage manager of "The Wiz" and other productions. Being a part of the Phi Beta Lambda family has brought tearful memories of happiness that will never leave me. I miss being taunted and loved by Ms. Mae Nash Gordon while working for Dean Vaughn (and just for the record, he's a really fun guy to be around once you break his shell...but always professional regardless).
Being an student at ASU has prepared me for many challenges...with still more to overcome. For those who struggled as I did, do not lose faith. As those who opened doors for me in the past, I shall soon help to open doors for those yet to come. |

ASU & COBA are the defining exeperiences of my life. Dr. Vaughn and the faculty really cared about us in a tough love kind of way. We were very prepared to compete with any other school as I have not only worked with Ivy types but have also supervised and hired them and beleive me, ASU COBA stands tall. I have very fond memories of SGA and NSBL at COBA and the opportunities it offered me to travel and go to the White House to meet then Pres. Reagan. After working as a political consultant running campaigns in NY, Detroit, LA, and elsewhere, I proudly carry the banner of my alma mater. I keep in touch with many of my old friends, now life-long mates as we get grayer and rounder. |

My thoughts of the "Good Ole Times" at ASU are numerous. I could write a book about the wonderful experiences at ASU. They range from the NIGHTS spent in COBA, the BLOOD, SWEAT, and TEARS sheaded from My Dear Coaches James Oliver, Clayton Harris, Johnny Mitchell, and William Graham. The men, along with my many class instructors, catapulted me to the man that I am today. I thank God for ASU and all of the people who were instrumental in my life. The times I had a ASU is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life. From my peers to the faculty and staff, they all played a important part of preparing me for the real world. Especially, Coach James Oliver, he really taught me the ingredients you need to be succesful in life period. The things he stressed mostly were hard work, discipline and loyalty.
The thought I cherished most from COBA, was in Mr. Barnett class. He really taught us partical things that we can apply in everyday life. One time he gave us an assignment to do, and we all had to go to the library to find this information. However, the inital information was not in ASU's library, so we were all over town looking for this information. When, we return to class, Mr. Barnett went around the room to take up each person's assigment. Once he finished taking up the assigments, he strolled right over to the trash can and tossed them all into trash. Then he proceeded to teach class like nothing has happen. I asked him after class, "why did you tossed our work in the trash? He replied, "I just wanted to see who will go the extra mile to find the answer". |

I honestly believe attending ASU and majoring in Business was the best decision I ever made in my life. I got a chance to meet and study with not only some on the best students but some of the best Professors in the world. (Dean Vaughn, Dr. Crawford, Dr. Self, Mr. Montgomery just to name a few).
Mr. Kingsley helped me to decide to major in Accounting. Dr. Self and Dean Vaughn challenged me early on and help bring the best out of me. Dr. Crawford and Mr. Montgomery encouraged me to take the CPA Exam while I was still enrolled at ASU.
I can't say enough about how the COBA help shape and mold not only my professional career but my personal life as well.
Since leaving ASU I have had the opportunity to lead projects in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Canada. And because of the confident I was given by Dean Vaughn and the rest of the professors I have no problem interacting with my co-workers from the Stanford, Harvard, Michigan and some of the other well name colleges.

The COBA (CIS) department did not prepare or introduce me to software engineering principles and concepts to be affective in the real world -- when I graduated (1982), CIS students were led to believe, once we finished, we were ready for the high-tech world of computer programming. This was far from the truth. Luckily for me, I received tremendous training from the Air Force software engineering schools, therefore I acquired he technical skills necessary to perform well. Today, I spend a considerable amount of time writing IT policy and participating on IT special projects, such as, performance measures, configuration managment, and PKI.
While at ASU, I matured, both personally and academically.

| About ASU: |
"Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance" is what the coaching style in the College of Business Administration (COBA) instilled in me. I graduated from COBA with the preparation and the confidence to do anything I chose. My choice is to work in higher education to continue the coaching style that Dean Vaughn implemented in COBA. As the first freshman to work in COBA's computer lab, I remember being trained and mentored by my "big brothers" Kenneth Darrington, Tony Graham, John Allbrittin, and Reginald Cronwell. I enjoyed when the graduates would return to COBA for informal discussions with the classes. .....I recall Dr. Yeh stressing the importance of being on time to class as a practice for our jobs. Business Communications from Dr. Henry Cobbs, taught us the art of presentations, business writing, "articulating our words," business attire and working within and leading groups. Dr. Cobbs became one of my biggest supporters seeing me through both undergraduate and graduate school and never giving up on me (regardless of how often I whined….Thanks Cobbs!). .....Other memories: Colorful greetings by Dean Vaughn; dodging Dean Vaughn's advice to take Income Tax Accounting (Mr. Griffith) until I no longer had a choice. (It became one of my most interesting classes which lead me, post graduation, to take the H&R Block Tax Preparation course and work with The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance/Tax Counseling for the Elderly (VITA/TCE) program even today.) ..... My most memorable advice from Dean Vaughn was at a Direct Marketing Conference when he told his representing student group to "act as if...." Act as if we were in charge, act as if we belonged, act as if we knew everything about what was being discussed...if we wanted to be in a particular position within a company, act as if we were in that position already (emulate the person who is where we want to be.) We were probably a site to see at the conference but before long, we were being asked questions "as if" were the primary source of information. ...Thanks Dean Vaughn! ..... I'm thankful for the constant encouraging words from Dr. Jean Crawford; the example of a programming wiz of Mr. Larry Cobb; the help and support of Ms. Tucker, Career Planning; and the dear support and nurturing from Coach James and Terry Oliver. Last but not least, I'm thankful my father insisted on ASU. As he has said several times, it was an experience I could not have received anywhere else. |

I really enjoyed my time at ASU, especially after I enrolled full-time in COBA.
At the time, I could not figure out why a CIS major needed to know about ISO 9000, production management, finance and accounting, and all of those non-computer related courses. Now, I realize why...I use all of the things that we learned in Undergrad almost everyday. Even the writing/editing skills that came from all of those 10 page papers are of good use now that I am in Grad School.
The teachers in COBA are second to none. Many of them were there to give me the encouragement that I needed whenever times got rough...Mr. D, Dr. Hingorani, Mr. Montgomery, Ms. Danesh, Mr. Woodard, Dr. Huang, and everyone else that helped me make it to May 12, 2001...if I left anyone out, charge it to my head, not my heart.

| About ASU: |
When I attended Alabama State, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, what is now Alabama State University was Alabama State College and the present College of Business Administration(COBA)was the Department of Business. Nevertheless, the dedication of teachers such as Dr. Jeraline Harven, Henry Torrance, Willis Wood, C. Johnson Dunn and others was inspirational. Their skills in motivation, effective use of available resources and instruction laid the groundwork for this Alabama State graduate to successfully complete the MBA program at Indiana University, one of the country's most competitve and respected graduate business schools, and law school at the University of Illinois. The same groundwork allowed me to obtain responsible corporate and legal positions, prior to entering private law practice.
I am proud of and, to some extent, bewildered at the conversion of the Department of Business that I attended into a preeminent and respected COBA. I know that the conversion was not an easy task and success | |
