ASU Hosted Entrepreneur Awards Banquet

 

August 17, 2007 and August 26, 2007

 

Alabama State University’s Small Business Development Center and The Black Belt Center for Enterprise Innovation hosted two awards banquets celebrating the 29th anniversary of the incorporation of the Alabama Small Business Development Consortium.  Dr. Percy J. Vaughn Jr. and Madam C.J. Walker Entrepreneur Awards Banquets recognized the leadership of outstanding small business owners and encourages small business entrepreneurship.  The awards are named for Dr. Percy J. Vaughn Jr., Dean of Alabama State University College of Business Administration and inaugural chairman of the Consortium, and Walker, philanthropist and highly successful businesswoman who became the first female African-American self-made millionaire.

 

The first awards banquet was held on August 17, 2007 at the Hayneville Plaza Conference Center in Hayneville, Alabama.  The award recipients for the Madame C.J. Walker award were: Howard “Smitty” Powell and Cynthia Payton-Carter. The award recipients for the Dr. Percy J. Vaughn, Jr., award were: Lee E. Jackson, Jr., Karl & Helenor Bell and Kelvin & Marilyn Lawrence.

 

The second awards banquet was held on August 26, 2007, at Union Springs Elementary School in Union Springs, Alabama. The award recipients for the Madame C.J. Walker award were: Jackie Broaden and Evelyn Smart. The award recipients for the Dr. Percy J. Vaughn Jr., award were: P.J. Walker, Dorothy Carter-Shelton and Jernigan’s Automotive & Salvage. And a special award was presented to Mr. Johnnie Lee Carter for his dedication, and many years of entrepreneurial services provided

to the Union Springs area.

 

The Alabama Small Business Development Consortium provides management and technical counseling and training to small business owners in Alabama. Its mission is to enhance economic growth by making Alabama small businesses more competitive by providing entrepreneurial assistance. Through the Consortium, 11 universities in Alabama have created small business development centers.
